A master key system is a clever network of keys that lets authorised people open multiple locks with one key.
Most master key systems involve a hierarchy of keys (like the one pictured). A grand master key opens all locks, master keys and submaster keys open multiple locks, whereas differ keys open a single specified lock.
This means you can give people access to multiple areas, whilst also limiting access in other areas. A master key lock system is the perfect solution for offices, hotels, hospitals, and any other buildings that require different access levels.
How we install master key systems
We provide secure, high-quality master key lock systems across the UK!
Master Key Design
Our master key locksmiths can design unique master key systems to your exact specifications, including master and submaster keys.
Master Key Assessment
We’ll visit your site to map out all the access points, the type of lock installed, and who needs to access these points.
Master Key Installation
With your approval, we’ll install a master key system with a 20-year patent (so locks and keys can’t be copied within this time).
Benefits of master key systems
✅ Greater access control - give users access to just the areas they need, and have complete control over who enters where
✅ Improved security - there are fewer keys that can be lost or stolen, whilst our master keys are protected from unauthorised duplication
✅ Convenience - individual keys can open multiple locks, making it much easier to organise and manage your keys
✅ Scalability - master key systems can easily be expanded, so you can add new doors and areas over time
✅ Cost-effective - you’ll need to create and recreate far fewer keys
Choose the perfect master key system for you
Every building has different security and access requirements, so we have several types of master key systems to choose from, including:
Multi-level master key system
The most popular choice. This is a tiered master key system where a grand master key sits at the top, and access is limited as you move down the tiers to master keys, sub-master keys and, finally, differ keys.
Keyed-alike system
The simplest key system. This is where all locks use the same key and there is no hierarchy, so this is a good choice when individual access control is not needed.
Central locking systems
Users can access individual areas, as well as shared communal areas.
Digital master key systems
Instead of traditional keys, you can use keycards, fobs and other digital methods to control access for multiple locks.

Frequently asked questions about master key systems
How do master key systems work?
Master key systems work by adding extra pins inside the lock cylinder. While standard cylindrical locks use pairs of pins, a master key system introduces a third “master wafer” pin that allows more than one key to turn the lock.
This system allows you to group locks together and create a key hierarchy that grants different access to different people.
Which master key system is right for me?
This depends on the size and layout of your building, as well as the number of users. For example, a multi-level grand master system is best for larger business premises, whereas a simple keyed-alike system is best for small offices or low-security internal doors.
What’s the difference between a master key and a keyed-alike system?
A master key system provides controlled access with multiple levels (from grand master to differ keys), while a simpler keyed-alike system uses the same key to open all locks.
How much do master key systems cost?
Prices depend on how locks are keyed, the size of your premises and how many keys we need to cut. We can only give you an accurate price once our master key locksmiths have assessed your property, but this will always be a free, no-obligation quote!
