Frequently asked questions about working for us

What qualifications do I need?

You don’t need any qualifications to be a locksmith, though carpentry experience will be useful. We provide full training for all new starters, starting with an initial 4 week internal training program in general locksmithing. Further training and refresher training including safe engineering and access control will be provided at regular intervals.

What are the hours of a locksmith?

Our locksmiths are contracted to work 40 hours a week. Timpson Security offer a 24-hour service, 365 days a year, which means there will be some evening and weekend work on a rota basis.

During quieter times, you will either be cutting keys in a Timpson branch or self-promoting yourself in your local area. All our locksmiths offer a mobile service covering a 40-50 mile radius of the base branch, therefore you will need a full UK driving licence.

How does the locksmith training work?

The Locksmith training programme will be modular, and have 3 Levels. Level 1, the basic Locksmith course has been designed by the industries award winning Master Locksmith, Mick Friend FBLI, and Author of ‘The Encyclopedia for Locksmiths’ and previously Chairman of the MLA.

Levels 2 & 3 are in development, but will concentrate, in depth, on a wide variety of Locksmith specialist topics such as key impressioning, safe opening, advanced car opening & key programming, and advanced electronic access control systems.

Where will I receive locksmith training?

We have recently developed our own in-house state of the art training facilities aimed at widening the skill set of our existing Locksmiths, as well as offering a comprehensive training program to new recruits looking to get into the Locksmith industry.
